The Santa Maria, formerly called La Gallega, was the ship, the type ratchet, flagship of Admiral Christopher Columbus on his voyage to, sailing west by the Atlantic Ocean, he discovered the American continent (1492). Property master Juan de la Cosa, who lived in the vicinity of the port of Palos de la Frontera, and that drove this trip, was regarded as an Admiral vessel heavy. The vessel came to run aground in a sand bank in ilhade Hispaniola (now Bay Caracol, Haiti), on the night of December 25, 1492. They were in vain the measures undertaken to redeem it, having been shot down the mast and the basement emptied of groceries without success. In place of its sinking, thanks to the help of the Indians, it was arranged transshipment cargo and crew to the girl, having founded Colombo, on site, the Fort Christmas, which left garnished with thirty-nine men.
