Cape Horn is one of those rare five mats that faced the ultimate test, one that was to make the sailor a confirmed, a caphornier. The cap-horn ships were mainly intended for the transport of coal, cement and miscellaneous manufactured products from Europe to South America on the Pacific side, and various fertilizers, nitrates and guano on their return. This type of boat was built from the 1880s and enjoyed remarkable glory until the arrival of the vapors. The "Cap Horn" is a five-mast boat with an overall length of 148.20m, a width of 16.40m at the waterline for a draft of 8.30m and a sail area of 5580m2. This ship capable of carrying 1150 tons was maneuvered by 48 crewmen and officers at a speed of up to 17 knots under the trade winds. Some had Bordeaux as home port.
Cape Horn is a vertical cliff, 580m high. It is a promontory marking the southernmost point of South America, whose surroundings are beaten by winds of irregular direction, embarrassed by reefs and shoals and traversed by many coastal currents.
This is a 1/150 Heller plastic kit, to build the French ship "Cap Horn".
