The "Super Lynx MK95" helicopter that the journals call "the Navy wings", is an improved version of Lynx, the result of a project developed since 1967 jointly by the French Aerospatiale and British Westland.
Aerospatiale manufactured about 30% of the parts of the "Lynx", which were mounted in Yeovil, in Britain, while the Westland Helicopters had equal participation in the manufacture of the French Puma helicopters and Gazelle.
The first prototype of the "Lynx", then known as "Sea Lynx", flew in May 1972, as result of the development of a model equipped with skis, which was presented by the manufacturer about 2 years ago.
The Portuguese Navy was the NATO Navy seventeenth to equip with helicopters "Lynx" and the eleventh, globally, to have this unit, which holds the world speed record for helicopters with 400.87 miles per hour.
This helicopter is designed to operate from the flight deck of escort ships, frigates and destroyers ie. Versatile platform for multidisciplinary employment through rapid changes in its internal configuration ensures a ready answer a broad range of policy fields. Works on board as another weapon and sensor integrated in the ship's weapon system. Ensures the ship's steering an extension of their surveillance and detection field allowing an early response to the outbreak of any tactical evolution. Therefore considered a force multiplier factor of any ship or naval force.
